August 2011 - Recap

K.
I'm over August... let's summarize this shiz.

August 12 - Beach House

It was cool to kick it at a beach house in Hermosa.  Sitting at the beach without being on the beach was actually pretty amazing.  People watching, drinking, eating, playing flip cup... summer is perfect. More pictures here.

August 12 - WeHo for the Last Time
Got into a huge fat fight with Jimmy this night.  Said FUCK this SHIT and took the bus home. People be crying, cussing, yelling.  Decided that I never want to be in this space because it's a breeding ground for drama.  But knowing my creative friends, I may be dragged again.  If this happens, I'm not drinking.  I'm designated driver.  And I'll do what I like doing which is taking a nap at Rage and complain the entire time about the music, the plastic and the prices... but not the parking because its not that bad... and when I say breeding ground for drama, I am aware that I am a contributor.

August  13 - Silver Lake
In Silverlake, you can find Lamill for over priced coffee and desserts (that cheesecake was $9), Yolk for over priced gifts, and Broome for over priced houseware.  But it's all so cute and hip!  In the center pic, you see me scanning the sku number for cheaper prices on Amazon.  (WHOOOPS.)  Thanks iPhone.  I recommend the ShopAdvisor app.

In Silver Lake you can also find cool things on the walls to take pictures next to.

August 18 - Haitian Food
Tigeorge's Chicken is right down the street!  And with a groupon we enjoyed amazing Haitian style chicken and appetizers.  I discovered a new type of spice that I couldn't handle.  MMMMM.  More cultures! More Groupons!

August 20 - Asian Foods
I initially thought that Ma Dang Sae had the best AYCE KBBQ for $10 because of the awesome sides and party atmosphere, but realized with Szeto's birthday that Hawng Jang was better!  I liked Ma Dang Sae because it felt like Final Destination in there.  You could see the gas piping running along the tables and the hot pan didn't seem very stable as it swayed side to side with every elbow that was placed on the table.  It was a down right fire hazard and the adrenaline that I got being there added to the experience.

Sam introduced me to "fresh ramen" you can buy at the grocery store for 3 bucks.  I gotta try it one day, but you have to eat it within two days :[.  We also checked out Santouka Ramen which was okay.  I really need the runny soft boiled egg man.

August 20 - Garage Sale

Speaking of APPs, I downloaded the GSALR app that maps out all the garage sales in my area using craigslist listings.  This is how we found this gold mine.  This Swedish lesbian was moving back to Europe and everything had to go!  She let people walk through her house.  This is where we found the couch, day bed and dressers.  But also in those two boxes are filled with design books that are worth at least $600 that we got for $20.  Included was years worth of Communication Arts and Print magazines.  CHA CHING for Jimmy.  This is when I missed my truck.  Could have snatched everything in one trip.  Had to go back and forth three times to fit everything in my Corolla, in Adult grey.

August 27 - World on Wheels
These chicas were already drunk when they rolled into the skating rink.  The birthday girl was a little tragic.  Watching her skate was painful - she looked like a Bambi on ice (not the skating show, but an actual deer on a frozen pond.)  She was all over the place.

Being the AZNs that they were they handled out tequila shots that the smuggled in using a backpack.  They gathered us for a cheers.  We tried to be discrete and I looked around nervously because I didn't want to get kicked out.  The birthday girl shouts, "CHEERS EVERYONE!!!!" And raises her glass in the middle of the circle.  After the initial shock, we all took our shots and scattered like ants.  And down to the rink we rolled.

Tommy decided not to come because I scared him out of it by saying that you had to go down a ramp to enter the rink.  I meant small incline, he pictured a half pipe.

The outfits weren't as colorful as a couple years back, but it was still a great time.
Of course Dab was artistic about this event.  Check out his version. I graced his blog!

August 30 - Mr.Black Blacklight Party

Hosting a blacklight party was on my to-do list, but Mr.Black beat me to it.  I raided the dollar store for glow-in-the-dark things and my only regret was not buying enough!

We got creative, but could not compete with the ladies from the first photo.  They were spectacular. This party saved me on having to buy all those black lights. That would have been costly.

And there you have it : August.  Though I am missing one event and that's my 6 month retreat to the Channel Island with Jimmy.  That gets its own entry.

Downtown with Ignia

August 6

Do NOT go to Bottega Louie for brunch.  It's a new-ish menu that they added.  Check out how our eggs Benedict came out:

No explanation just plopped it on the table.  Jon summed up his dissatisfaction with the restaurant on yelp for you to check out.  What a disaster.

The pizza on the other hand was fantastic.

The Disney Concert Hall is ideal for jumping photos

I tried to do this leap at the camera method, but it was a bit dangerous

Awwww Key Club friends.

Alysia being schmexy.

Random August

August 5th
Yes... very behind.

Ern is really good at doing a variety of things such as outdoor screenings.  Though I haven't been to Cinespia - the movie screenings in the Hollywood cemetery, we were able to check out Outdoor Cinemar Foodfest

Check out these divas and their picnic equipment

We watched Fargo at USC.  Lots of folks came out.  The movie itself was interesting.  I enjoyed it for the most part and it was far from what I usually watch.

Jimmy makes this face when he's happy.

Sleeping bag couture

We checked out The Echo's Funky Sole night and did a little Motown intimidating the moves on the screen.

Hih hih hih hiiipppsters...

We had folks turn around, count down and took a shot of them as the turned to the camera on "1" results above.  Not the most flattering moments.

New Home

Jimmy and I moved into Ern's room this week.
We are officially nesting lesbians.

We found this purple couch and day bed at a garage sale for a steal of a price.  This is the living room section of our loft style space.

A closer look at the reading nook.  There is actually a nice view and great lighting coming from this one corner.

The door on the left leads to a walk in closet where Jimmy and I pile all of our clothing and the right door goes to a semi functional bathroom that was recently added on.  We don't trust the piping so, number 1 only and there's a shower stall as well.

The hall that leads into my old room is going to transform into a giant picture collage.  It has started!

Here is the reverse view.  We kept the bed in the same spot as Ern's but added a mini fridge and hid the ghetto exposed walls.

Ern used to house couch surfers in this "cave."  We took out the mattress and turned into a cubical-like office space.  All paper work clutter stays in this room.

Here is the sleeping space.  We also bought the red dresser and night stand from the same moving sale.  I sleep near the window because I love waking up to sun light and Jimmy sleeps by the alarm clock to help him wake up early for work.

It feels so cozy.  Though the bed slates keep fall off the frame and Jimmy and I crash to the floor randomly if there's too much movement.... or we're just really fat.  Fat nesting lesbians who watched Black Swan instead of going out.  Which, by the way, gave me anxiety after we finished watching it.  Good grief.

I like sharing the same space as Jimmy.  It forces me to be neater about my things because I want to respect the space.  The attic is large enough that we can escape to our own separate corners if we need "me" time.

Thinking about a room-warming party.  But let's wait until all these bdays calm down.

Random Laughter Wanes

As of 10/1 Ern is moving out of 321 and into his boyfriend's house about 5 miles away in Los Feliz.  Though I'm happy for him and excited to move into his GIANT room with Jimmy, I'm starting to get bummed about not seeing him around the house laughing at nothing and making ugly faces.

It felt good to be around his energy and act silly and ridiculous while Sam and Jimmy stared at us in utter confusion.  Through out the years we've developed a considerable amount of inside jokes and it was always, always a relief to come home to chat with him after a long work day.

At the beginning when we started decorating he would always say, "it's finally starting to look like a home..." and then he stopped saying it because it became a home.

During drives through LA we'd make up song lyrics which is something I did with Aaron in San Jose.. maybe it's a Filipino thing, but we'd always have a good laugh.  And the times he'd grab my camera to check himself out in recent photos I took of him.

I'll miss him updating his status on his computer causing my phone to vibrate.  He would go.. "that's just me.." and then I go, "i know."  And even that made us laugh.  I'll also miss giving him really good advise. One time when he was sad/lonely about something I reassured him that "some people were meant to just have cats..."

Thanks to him I have about a dozen hideous photos of me doing the Duck Face.  Though I guess, I would have done that face anyway, but now it has a label.

Though one thing I wont miss are the times he throws really hard things at me... like books or a shoe... and sucks for me: he had really great aim and always managed to get my face.  You know.. I don't think any one of my friends has ever intentionally thrown HARD things at me... only pretend throw when they were "mad."

I also have a list of "Black Girl Names" that we came up with in my phone like Tehrangela, Confrentatia, Convolutia, Fabreesha, Camadre, Ergonamy, Expresha and Teahze.

Ugh.

I can't believe he's giving up this:

For this:

We would have made great boyfriends if the whole being attracted to each other thing wasn't so important.

Thanks for everything Ern. You introduced me the best part of LA.
Oh Cool... you're keeping a set of keys.

R&BBQ

Thought it would be a great way to close the summer with a BBQ, but with a tribute to 90's / Early 2000's R&B music.  Welcome to the R&BBQ.  See what we did there?

I learned something about skewers: wet them so the don't burn and pack the food close together because exposed skewer will cause it to break.  Yes. I lacked this logic and told folks to space out the food and about half the sticks fell a part.

We had an assembly line going on.  Mushrooms for obnoxious.. i mean vegetarian guests.

Jimmy put together 7 hours of reminiscent music.  The day time kick back became a karaoke session.

We also had folks dress up to the best of their ability.  I wish I kept my Old Navy Tech vest and overalls. Ern won with his cargo pants and baggy polo.

Not sure what's going on here, but for a moment Ern and I stood against the wall with our arms crossed nodding our heads to the music imitating a time when we didn't have cellphones to look at in order to not look bored at a party... yeah you remember doing that.

Happy birthday Brian, here's a slice of cake I found in the fridge.. ... I mean, DESSERT!  :D
