February 2014 Recap

Me... at Guisados

February... what I remember about February is captured in a couple of snags.  I'm saving a separate blog entry for my Portland Seattle trip.

I tried to attend the 115th Golden Dragon Parade & Chinese New Year Festival and took my friends on an odd fail ride.  I was having an issue with parking, but found a spot on a hill.  I was facing downward and needed to backup.  So I pressed aggressive on the paddle to compensate for gravity. Except..... I was in the wrong gear and jolted forward almost hitting the car in front of me.  My passangers screamed.  But I caught myself and decided to park farther and safer.  Glad I didn't cause damage.

After walking a mile and watching 10 minutes of the parade, dragons and confetti oh my.  We went to find food.  We found a restaurunt in an obscure plaza and discovered a mild wait.  All of a sudden the lights went out and the cooks walked out of the kitchen for a smoke.  No electricity.  Fail.

We walked to a Banh Mi place that I liked and got excited.... the staff walked out and said, "sorry we're all out.. crazy day."  The festival partakers sold them out!  UGH Fail.

Our third choice was a sketchy and really cheap and dirty takeout place with no seating.  This is us in an alley eating oily things.  Happy Year of the Horse.

This is my favorite alley way between upscale apartments in the Fashion District off Santee street.  And look, I found a pretty tasty quesadilla for 3 bucks.  Looks like this area is getting a face lift with a 20 year project to add a mega City Market which will take over 10 blocks and include hotels, apartments, offices, and even a college.  The Santee alley will probably die as the rent goes up.  So sad, but years in the making.

I stopped by the LA Art Book Fair at the Geffen.  It was really pretty.. I'm illiterate, but I was amused by an Asian-Australian Queer Zine.  Ern says that 321 should have a zine.

There was thing thing called the Superbowl.  I don't know.  I stopped by Kevyns work place to eat American junk food and high five people.

This is real street art.

Resourceful reflector... a perfect headslot

Jimmy is taking food pictures for our friend's pop up Filipino food project.  It's amazing to see passionate people taking it to the next level.  Check out PATAO

This is the other couple.  Jlo is worried about the future and Andrew and considering the characters in his life he can incorporate into his film.

We sort of invaded private property in Echo Park to explore this new complex of condensed homes.  Really cute and in a great location.

What do you do when you live in an attic space?  You have movie nights and project Frozen and Beyonce music videos on your slanted walls.  MORE MOVIE NIGHTS!

EATING OUT FEBRUARY

- Grimaldi's - Lots of garlic and lots of sausage is my pizza topping jam.  Don't need to go to New York any more!
- Hoy-ka - I got a message on yelp! That my favorite boat noodle place moved.  I was worried that prices would go up since they moved to a location with more traffic.  Nope.  Still under $6 for an amazing spicy bowl of Thai Boat Noodle.
- PATAO Homemade Ice Cream and Pork Belly - My friend is crazy talented.  No sous chef either.
- Folliero’s Italian Food and Pizza - Mmmm really affordable Italian food.  That's what I like!
- Overpriced West side food - A giant chicken pot pie for like $20.. really?
- Boiling Point - Valentines tradition!
- Simpang Asia - So good.  So cheap.  Indonesian food.. but on the West. Gasp.
- Versailles Restaurant - That Cuban chain with that moist chicken.  Yummzers

Interest in Death

After fronting $18 dollars to watch Final Destination 5 in 3D, I browsed the Final Destination Wiki until 4 in the morning.

Re-watching the deaths and reading up on "death's clues."

I checked out the Final Destination montage from Daily What: http://thedailywh.at/tag/final-destination/

And I'm hooked on this Saved by the Bell, Final Destination Music Video.

Final Destination 5 was amazing.  The film was less campy and focused on better special effects.  The death scenes looked real.  There was also some character development that was somewhat lacking in the movies prior.

Then Jimmy showed me this:

Last night, the Indiana State Fair Stage Collapsed during a Sugarland Concert.  5 dead, 40 Hospitalized due to high gust of winds.  The video in HD above makes it look like a scene from the movie series.  High gust of winds was also the explanation behind the first death scene in the movie.

Were there any real life cues that could have helped these 5 people survive? Watch this video full screen, it's unbelievable.

I wrapped some frayed wires in my room with electrical tape.  I'm assuming that the currently Victorian house that I'm living in will not survive an earthquake.  Though if it's my time to go... there's little that I can do to escape it no matter how cautious I am.

Which I guess is the point of the series.

And there's nothing scarier than an old Chinese woman coming at you with an acupuncture needle in 3D.

Vietnamese Films

I just finished watching Passport to Love (Chuyen Tinh Xa Xu) off netflix and I was blown away by the American style screenplay and cinematography.

In my mind, the only form of Vietnamese entertainment that I knew of was bad music videos, variety shows and classic Viet songs sung over and over by new artists.  After watching this film that was released in 2009, I am left speechless.

It was a chick flick, Korean drama with a tinge of Vietnamese and Vietnamese American humor and cultural references.

There were sex scenes, references to the new generation Vietnamese American experiences and superb acting.  Any Vietnamese individual who watches would be blown away since Vietnamese film is a strange idea.

You can watch the movie for free off IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/video/hulu/vi2656278809/

I looked up the director Victor Vu and found that he directed the Vietnamese film Spirits, which is a horror movie that I own and some new stuff such as Battle of the Brides and Inferno recycling actors.  Apparently there are only 10 actors in Vietnam and Inferno got some heat for being a shocking replica of another film.  Read comments.

Another film I want to check out is Saigon Electric. I don't know much about this movie, but I was introduced to it at the Asian American Film Festival.

The appeal is the focus of Vietnam's youth and dance culture.  Something that I was also not aware of even though I took some hip hop classes in Saigon when I was there some years back.  Check out the trailer here.

I'm just waiting for it to come out on DVD since I missed the screenings.

===
A week ago, I got check out Krunk Fu Battle Battle which featured Lawrence Kao from Kaba Modern.  The musical performance took place in Brooklyn.  It was about a boy who moves to the hood where he has to dance battle a bboi bully in order for him to stay on campus.  This involves a girl, a best friend and an overworked mom.  Great dancing, rapping and singing from the actors.  With a handful of cuties... mmm Matt Tayao.

I love Asian American film and theater!

Inception - Mind Fuck

My brain is seriously throbbing.  I love these kinds of movies.  You have to go see it and there are tons of action scenes thus making it a must-watch-in-the-theater flick.  I'm going to watch it again because I kept laughing at inappropriate parts and thus missing crucial dialogue.  I actually don't even know the names of the characters except Fisher and Ma.

Ever since the movie I've been questioning my reality.  Everything is so routine.  I've also been enjoying my snoozed slumber because I feel as though I am consciously controlling my dream.  As of late, it has been involving romantic imagery.  *gasp* I'd love to discuss the many questions I have regarding the concept such as.. how is Fishers subconscious strong/complex enough to maintain 3 detailed levels of dreams with projections that keep attacking the protagonists?

The 5 Levels of INCEPTION (click to enlarge):

On a side note I found it hilarious that during the preview of the move Devil, the audience groaned when they saw M. Night Shyamalan's name appear on the screen in big bold letters.  One audience member went as far to shout, "it's gonna suck!" Thus prompting scattered agreeing chuckles. Seriously Shamalamadingdong, stop making movies. You're just upsetting your Sixth Sense fans.

It is Written

I just watched Slum Dog Millionaire.

I don't believe in Destiny, but I like pretending.

I like to buy lotto tickets with the numbers included in my fortune cookie.

I just applied to be a barback at a night club. In hopes of eventually being a bartender.

==

I wrote a note on the back of my receipt and handed it to a bus boy. It said, "Yo, I think you're cute." Aaron witnessed this and told me he was embarrassed for me and we dashed out of the restaurant.

==

While watching American Idol, I drank out of a glass I thought was mine. When I looked inside the glass, there was mold floating around. I didn't feel nauseous.

Just Kicking it With the Folks

On Friday my folks invited me out to The Boiling Crab.

My mom is a savage. She tore up the crab with her hands and ate ALL of the insides!

And.. wow, there were a lot of cute Asian boys there. Thank goodness I had a bib.

==

The Movie "Knowing" with Nicolas Cage was pretty good, considering how much I lowered my expectations. It was very M.Night ShamalamadingDong in a bad way. If I were with my friends we would have been laughing because Nicolas cage was almost as bad as MarkyMark in "The Happening." It's really hard to do these types of disaster movies because they take themselves so seriously, yet cast such horrible actors.

My dad was on the edge of his seat, he loves these types of movies... hmm.. me too.

You should hang out with your parents more, you're lucky enough to have them.
Unless they pushed you to become a doctor/lawyer/engineer, those selfish assholes can go to hell for wanting you to succeed financially/intellectually and suppressing your creative nature and real identity.

Haha. No seriously, just for a day.

Distracting Blue Penis

Watchmen.

It was too long. Fight scenes were great, blue penis swaying in the wind was VERY DISTRACTING.

One of the watchmen shoots a pregnant Vietnamese women.

I felt like I was watching three different movies because the movie was all over the place (which usually happens when you have more than one superhero/villain)

And a sex scene that was basically porn... sort of uncomfortable in the 2 hour and 45 minute movie.

Don't waste your money folks.

3D Films Make me Dizzy

Disclaimer- Non Emo Version of What I've been Up to.

November DRAGON!!!!!
If someone offers you a ride to the city, YOU TAKE IT!!! I found myself with a random slew of boys drinking and dancing the night away. DJ ZAX on the hip hop floor was interesting.

He played very obscure tracks toward the end, but people kept dancing. I noticed some faces turning sour as each track he played was really unrecognizable. It was as if he were playing TRACK 6 off all the gay hip hop albums. You know, the TRACK that no one plays on the radio and it only comes up while you are doing homework. yeah, random shit like that.

And a random picture with some acquaintances found itself on the facebook. Strange. I dont remember flipping off the camera. Sadly, non of THE boys were there.

==

Saturday
"Do you know the plan today? We are going to Visit grandpa and then go to church" asked my dad.
"Actually, I have lunch plans with the boys"
"Do you know what today is? It's your grandma's death anniversary!'

ARG! But we made it work. With the help of Joe's love of driving, I got where I wanted to be in no time at all. We were at the Standford shopping center and I felt like I was in the HILLS.

People were excessively rich and snooty. Ugh. "This line is OUT OF CONTROL!" This sassy, ditsy Asian girl exclaimed while she waited for her overpriced cupcake from Sprinkles.

You can even buy a cupcake for your dog. Are you serious?
What a terrible place.

Death Anniversaries are a big deal to Vietnamese folks. You're supposed to have a HUGE dinner and invite everyone. It's like Thanksgiving, but rather you are paying respects to someone who has passed away. My Vietnamese American family decided just to have it at a Chinese place.

The boys wanted to see BOLT in 3D.
Bad idea. My eyes were so tired trying to focus and I slept on Szeto's shoulder 20 minutes into the movie. I felt like throwing up on the Hannah Montana child sitting in front of me.

Sadly, I was unable to appreciate the movie for its 90% approval rating on rotten tomatoes.

==

I bought a new camera condom off Ebay. And look what they sent me.

I am mildly offended. I ordered BLACK!
Dang... even people's gaydar in Hong Kong go off when they come close to interacting with me.

==

Trying to dress better. I don't think I was meant to dress better. I try to remember rules and put together a semi decent outfit. Ugh. It's so unnatural.

I'm considering growing out my hair again...eh, I did it two years ago, what do you think? The inbetween stage is horrible and it's probably gonna make me look younger. MMmm, but I want some sexy, run your fingers through my hair.. hair.

My brother is actually kicking my ASS in the cool department... especially now that he's taller than me.

While searching for more hairchives, I found this picture. I love the composition.

My Sassy Girl

The Original, 2001 Korean version of this movie was a hit.
Yeopgijeogin geunyeo... everyone say it with me. Ye O PG&EO EO EO GIN GOOOO yEO EO.

I remember all my Asian American friends (who were little bit more ASIAN.. just a little bit) talking about this movie. You know, the same kids that make all their friends watch Battle Royale and listen to um Utada. Only a LITTLE bit more Asian.

I watched it, it was okay. I was confused. I thought the movie should have been called, "My Girlfriend's a Crazy Bitch and I am a Huge PUSH OVER" but sassy is cool too.

I was worried about the American 2008 remake. All the horror remakes were horrorBULL-shit, but with my expectations low and the eye candy high (Jesse Bradford, YUM!) I was pleasantly touched, moved and inspired. Not to mention the cinematography was great. (Same director as Love Actually.)

I liked the characters in the American version. The girl wasn't as bitchy, but rather charming and I guess what we (US kids) believe what "sassy" is. The guy was also a push over, but always "strong" as described by others.

==

This movie made the boys that I was sitting next to text the people they missed while I sat there dissecting the movie and breaking down each memorable quote.

"Some of us think we were destined, but it gets snatch from us. But we still move on because we have to see how it ends."

For sure.

==

And the closing line: "Destiny is the bridge we build to the people we love."

Do I believe in Destiny? Do I believe in "meant to be?"
Yes and No.

I guess the point of the movie is that you have to build your own destiny.

==
My parents watched the movie and I told them it was based on a Korean movie. My dad responded, "OH, NO WONDER IT WAS COMPLICATED!" Hah, well love's complicated.

Crash

I borrowed two movies from the library: Robots and Crash.

My dad told me he started to watch Crash, but replaced it with Robots because Crash dealt with a lot of race issues. My dad wants to be entertained by a colorful world of action, mystery, humor, not reminded of realities of our daily lives.

In 2006, Crash won the Academy Award for Best Picture. I never desired to watch it. My friends equally brushed off the movie by saying that it dealt with a lot of race issues. To me "race issues" does not equate to entertainment. I popped in the DVD with an empty mind; preparing myself for nothing and shit, I should have worn a seat belt.

I realize that I appreciate movies that I expect very little from. Hype and expectations ruin experiences for me. And to come in with a blank canvas as opposed to preconceived notions is the best way to approach a movie. And maybe that's why I was so moved, because I didn't anticipate such a ride.

The movie starts with a narrative:
It's the sense of touch. In any real city, you walk, you know? You brush past people, people bump into you. In L.A., nobody touches you. We're always behind this metal and glass. I think we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other, just so we can feel something.

This movie was amazing, to say the least. And I found myself crying a great deal; like heavy sobbing. Good lord. It was so profound.

=========================================

Yesterday I talked to my cousin about movies. Her list of favorites rarely coincided with mine. When I was in Blockbuster with Jen, our movie tastes also fell short of matching.

To right of my blog you see a list of my "favorite movies." Most of them lack substance. They qualify as good movies to me because my attention is drawn to them. I am difficult to please.

I love this movie so much that I'd watch it again, with you. There was a lot of art, symbolism, powerful lines that can only be caught if you watch a movie more than one time; a lot more of the piece of art to be appreciated.

My goal: to watch award winning movies and acclaimed independent films found at the library. To be touched and inspired by movies that succeed to captivate me. Anyone want to join me?

Stop Pretending

When he first contacted me, he told me his name was James. But then his real name slipped when he was telling me a story.

But for now, instead of Craigslist boy, I'm going to call him James.

It's ironic. Smyr pointed out that I talk all about honesty and trust. But that's like the opposite of what craigslist's personals are about. I don't know, it's not like I'm NOT being cautious. Remember kids: TRUST NO ONE. But that doesn't mean I can't make a new friend.

James has a hot voice.

I was at Arby's and I called him up. I was wearing basketball shorts and stood a considerable distance from the register because I didn't know what to order. While talking to James, for some reason, I got *cough* excited. I tried to hide it with my hand, which was holding my wallet. It wasn't very slick and the cashier noticed. In fact, she was staring at my crouch with a smirk.

Good lord. I ended the call abruptly and tried to play it off and ordered my food. Gah.

Last night, James and I went to get some food at Lee's Noodle House. To my excitement, they had Pho Ap Chao! Which is Pho Noodles fried and cut into squares in a HK sort of style sauce.

God, if you LOVE Pho! You'll LOVE Fried PHO!
(It's a really rare dish)
==========================================================
On Sunday, my boys and I watched Wanted. I was stressing, because I promised James I would watch it with him during our dinner and movie "non-date." I started to scheme how I would pretend I'm watching it for the first time with him. How do I react? "Wow! did you see that? AMAZING! Sooooo HOT!"

But I realized that I should just be honest. And hope that James isn't disappointed that I already messed up our plans. Even though it's minor. OR maybe could suggest watching Wall-E instead because it was supposed to be cute (and not mention that I had already seen Wanted.)

At Lee's Noodle House, I just told him the truth. Because even though it's minor... being truthful is important to me and I should follow up on at least ONE of my morals. James' reaction, was not what I expected. He exclaimed, "I WAS GOING TO WATCH IT WITH MY FRIENDS TOO!" He elaborated how he was ALSO stressing about how to pretend that he was watching Wanted for the first time with me. And how Ironically funny it would be if BOTH of us pretended. We decided to watch Wall-E and I encouraged him to watch Wanted with his friends. Perfect.

For some reason, that made me happy. I guess because it worked out and I love it when things work out. James and I are really clicking. I actually like how he's in closet. It means that he's not sleeping with the community. And it's sort of like he's straight. HAWT. I'm just waiting for something strange to pop up. Like... he's actually a mermaid or he's missing a toe or that he's actually 42 not 22 or he hates CHEESE! (OMG NO!!) But so far the only thing is that he's ethnically Chinese, but culturally Filipino. *gasp* I wonder what else he's hiding.

At least I know his real name. Or so I think!

End of June Recap

When ever I do these entries, I'm reminded of VH1's "I Love the ___"

June was an interesting month. A lot of lows, but I'm hoping that June was just the concluding chapter for this part of my life.

The last two weeks of June would have been amazing. I thought I was getting out of the slump that I was in, but then I get that remark in my Honesty Box. Like, seriously.

Fuck you.

Maybe it was a test: "Christopher, have you become a stronger person? Have you really learned to move on? Are you done asking for pity... if not from others, but from yourself?... well just to make sure... here is an asshole comment in your honesty box that I know will hurt your soft heart. A nice kick in your balls... spit on you while you're down. Yeah! Man up. Sensitive people get stepped on and I am enjoying this. YOU SUCK CHRISTOPHER, YOU ARROGANT PIECE OF SHIT!!!"

...interesting.

It's like road rage. I'm sorry I'm such a terrible driver; I'm trying my best, okay? Is all that honking necessary? Can't we just all go to the Zoo and relax? Let's just all have self-serve yogurt for 30cents an ounce with mochi and calm down. If you don't like me, just get in the right lane. Geez.

Anyway. No more misfortunes, bad choices and hate mail. Let the rest of 2008 be nice.

June 21: San Diego
After the beach. I discovered Hillcrest. I went shopping on my own and got hot speedo swimsuit and a nice hoody jacket. Hillcrest is an amazing gay district. It's like a subdued West Hollywood were people are more chill. Gotta take the boys here. That night we went to the Whistlestop, which is the cool Indie-Electropop sort of place. Someone there was making fun of the way I was dancing. Everyone was smoking. And I was tired. I was totally out of my element! But I loved being somewhere new! Poor Dholla always goes gay clubbing! It's time to go electroPOP! :D

Sandy made that dress!

June 22:More of my Favorite Girls
I bused to Caitlin's Graduation and had lunch with her at PF Chang's. I've never been there, but ALL my friends warned me about that place. "IF you want over-priced, Americanize insult to Chinese cooking, than be my guest." I read in a book that the way PF Chang's is decorated in front with Stone Soliders is parallel to a Chinese Cemetery. Eh. I've never been there. It was good, but if you're going to have Chinese... better go to a Chinese place. After all, there are more Chinese restaurants in the US than there are McDonald's and KFC combined. (According to a book I was reading.)

Then I spent some time with my Middle School friend, Jen. We did what she usually does in sunny San Diego: watch movies! We watched Awake. Which was surprisingly very good. I'm going to have to recommend it! And we had Tarte Tatin. It was delcious! The insides felt like cheese! I LOVE IT!

June 27: Cousin's 30th Birthday
I missed out on Dragon to hang out with my family. My cousin who turned 30 is truly blessed. She got a warehouse south of Downtown and hosted a dinner and dancing party. Her family and her Salsa Dancing team came out. The warehouse was gorgeous and the DJ was pretty good. I got hyphy and stood in awe at the site of her salsa dancing friends take the floor.

Her husband sang a surprise song while playing the guitar. It was truly romantic.

June 28: SF House Warming Party
I was being fickle again. I was going to take a shit load of public transportation, but concluded that having a car in the city was the best idea. Before hitting the town, Mony and I checked out a random plaza at Silver Creek and Aborn. There we found a market with GIANT Jack fruit. I read this sign out loud in Vietnamese and the the guy next to me was impressed. He was being friendly and told me about the Mangosteens that were exposed to radiation to kill bugs. Random!

We made it to the city and had some okonomiyaki in Japan town. Delicious!

We had left overs and I gave it to a homeless guy under some stairs. He was genuinely appreciative. DOn't throw away food! Give it to homeless.

Mony and I checked out my friend's house warming party then headed to the pink party which was a GIANT disappointment. Thousands of aimless people in the castro. WTF. We got out of there ASAP... and Michelle tried to warn strangers not to go! Good job Michelle! One of my friends ran into their cousin. "OMG is that my cousin?!" My friend approached him and he was nervous. Apparently he was in the closet. Okay. Don't hate me, but I wasn't thinking. I ran up to them, put my arm around my friend and shouted, "BUSTED!!!!" To their cousin. He got more scared... and awkwardly walked away. OOPS. Shit. Way to go. -.0

We ended up going back to my friend's house warming party and I had a blast reconnecting with some long lost high school friends.

Nurse, Dentist to be and a Grad Student in Ethnic studies. My hs friends are hot!

One of the girls let Mony try to unlatch her bra with one hand while she made moaning sounds. I couldn't stop laughing! Hahaha. She said that it's HOT when guys can do it with ONE hand. SO PRACTICE you Straighties!

June 29: Pride
Before we went to pride. We got breakfast at The Pork Store on Haight and Ashbury! So much food! I love biscuits and gravy and the pork chops weren't bad either!

I've been to pride so many times. But this time was different because I was on a mission: Get Margaret Cho's Autograph! We waited in the cold at the API Stage in the VERY front; watched some interesting performances. When she got up there, she entertained the people who waited to see her. She knows how to work the crowd! And we saw her orange underwear One of the funny things she said was that she wasn't a fag hag because she likes to hang out with Bears... So they should call her Goldilocks! HAHA.

When her short appearance concluded, Michelle urged me to chase her to get her autograph. I was SO FREAKING SHY!! She put on her hoodie and started to walk fast. We chased her. Michelle said to me, "JUST GO! SHE'S NICE!" But I couldn't I was two feet away, but I couldn't ask. Michelle pushed me aside and moved forward. "Excuse me" She poked Margaret's elbow, "My friend would like an autograph!" Margaret responded, "sure!" And I handed her my DVD and a pen! I put my arm around her and said, "I love you, you are wonderful." She said thank you and dashed away to some VIP event.

YES!

June 30: Kaiser
I got my blood drawn so that I can be a volunteer at my Kaiser. I hate needles. I was getting an anxiety attack. But the nurse said, "you'll be fine." To my surprise, they drew blood with this contraption that automatically extracts the fluid through the needle. Last time I got blood drawn, it was manual. The syringe was huge and the nurse was using her tiny fingers to pull up on the end of the needle. Thank goodness methods have improved.

July is looking up. I'm considering Grad school in Counselling. Why? Because I realize that I am "good with people." But not in the business world. I am "humanitarian" as my cousin would say. I like to listen. I try to care. I think this is something I want to pursue.

And craigslist boy is turning out to be a cool guy. Though I'm amused that no one's really asked me about him. I guess meeting people on Craigslist is supposed to be hush-hush. Whatever. He told me, that what he likes about me is that I'm not all about sex. Well... cuz I wanted COFFEE! God damn. Though he also told me that that is why he responded to my ad. Because he posted an ad a while back just asking to chill (similar to mine). Sometimes, you just want to make friends out of your network... and just go from there.

I'm crossing my fingers that he doesn't kill me and bury me with tomatos.
